We are excessively excited to welcome internationally acclaimed author, Louis de Bernières to our Literature Tent. His much loved novel, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, brought him to the world’s attention in 1994 – and those that did not read the book, fell in love with his characters through the film adaptation. Louis will be in conversation with our very own David Lloyd and will also be playing the mandolin with The Bookshop Band after the talk. The Bookshop Band has written a CD of songs inspired by Louis’ epic new love story, The Dust That Falls From Dreams, which is set in the first half of the twentieth century
Louis is a prolific writer, his celebrated sixth novel, and our Festival Director’s favourite, Birds Without Wings, came out in 2004. A Partisan’s Daughter (2008), was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and Notwithstanding: English Village Stories, was published in Autumn 2009. De Bernières’ first collection of poetry, Imagining Alexandria: Poems in Memory of Constantinos Cavafis(2013) is also available in audio, read by the author (CD and download). Louis’ latest collection of poems, OF LOVE AND DESIRE, published in 2016, overwhelm with the emotions of infatuation, desire, heartache and of course disillusion.
As well as writing, Louis is a keen musician, playing the flute and guitar as well as mandolin. This incredibly talented man is travelling from his home in Norfolk to be with us.
